Can visual literacy enhance the learning in your classroom?
It is interesting that in an increasing visual age mathematics isn't pushing a core idea of math is the visual aspects of data presentation. Math is a subject where one of the primary means of modeling are charts and graphs. Well constructed charts and graphs can illuminate connections and relationships. Visual literacy does have to do with pure images and color, but it also is connecting abstract and literal relationships via lines and curves. If students are taught strong visual literacy skills it will improve their understanding of mathematics and vice versa. Global communication is increasingly important and the idea of communication across languages and cultures is absolutely part of Global Collaboration. Project Based learning usually has a construction or visual presentation as part of assessment. This ties in with being able to analyze data and present to customers and others in a workforce. Good visuals will be in part one of my goals to improve upon. The idea of connecting and triggering the mind through visual images is powerful and will hopefully improve student connection and understanding.
